Description
This poem was written in 1932 by Avigdor Hameiri, a Hungarian-Israeli poet and author, drawing on the holiday of Passover and its messianic hopefulness. It is paired with my interpretation of a woodcut illustration from the 1609 Venice Haggadah, which shows the Messiah entering Jerusalem, heralded by the prophet Elijah. From the surrounding hills, as the sun and moon shine simultaneously in the sky, people of different ages and races approach the city, illustrating the Divine declaration that in the messianic age, “My house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” In the very centre, the rebuilt Temple appears as the Dome of the Rock.
